The new matrix of 5-4-77 is splendid, the best verson yet of this highly praised, classic show. The SBD portions are from David Gans via Charlie Miller, and the AUD parts from Jerry Moore in row 6 or 8.

Performances are stunning -- tight and energetic but also spacey and transcendental. The entire second set is actually one long jam, with all the late-70s favorites played in succession in superb versions. Donna's sweet and mystical, and so is Jerry's lead. It's hard to pick out a single cut as pre-eminently better than the others.

Thought you might be pulling some legs with the Donna comment, but this is one of her best recorded performances. Oft overlooked and even more frequently maligned, even by me, when Donna is on, she makes a great contribution. More often than not her singing is better on this tour than any other...just more evidence that Spring 77 was the pinnacle.

Glad you enjoy the new matrix, Dhamma1, and thanks for the post.

IT WAS A REAL TREAT TO ADD MORE OF THAT THICK MAY ‘77 ATMOSPHERE FROM ONE OF JERRY MOORE’S SUPERB AUDIENCE RECORDINGS. THE SPACIOUS, ROBUST SOUND EMANATING FROM THE BAND DURING THIS PERIOD IN GRATEFUL DEAD HISTORY IS REALLY SOMETHING TO BEHOLD, AND IT IS PART OF THE REASON WHY THESE SHOWS SOUND AS GOOD AS THEY DO. I FIND THAT OUT OF ALL THE ’77 MATRIXES I’VE WORKED ON, THIS ONE HAS THAT SPECIAL SOUND MORE THAN ANY OF THEM. WHILE OTHERS MIGHT SOUND BETTER SONICALLY (5/8/77), THIS (THAT IS, SET 2) JUST HAS MORE OF THAT MAY ’77 “MYSTIQUE” (AS WHIRLWIND DREAMER 65-95 POINTED OUT) - THAT’S THE BEST WAY I CAN PUT IT.

PEACE

Thanks for the tastefully done matrix remixes.

Can you gussy up this show, the SBD could use some help:

Thanks for the suggestion, spacedface, which I value. I personally feel the AUD here would be better than any matrix I produce of the show. I've had a couple 93 suggestions as of late, but I feel some of the AUDs from this year, like this one, are "like" SBD quality - which is kind of like a matrix...but not. In any case, I don't want to muss up the AUD on this. Peace.

Probably my 2nd favorite Fire of the year. A pristine Terrapin and lovely Comes A Time. 1st set doesn't pack the punch of the next few gigs, but a good one nonetheless.

Thanks for the heads up .....
